LAKEWOOD, Wash., July 16, 2012 – Anyone with a physical disability that is interested in learning how to play golf, or get private instructions on how to improve their game, is invited to the ninth annual ‘First Swing Clinic’ at American Lake Veterans Rehabilitation Center & Golf Course on Monday, July 23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. PGA professional instructors, nurses and physical therapists will team up to offer coaching and training, as well as introduce participants to adaptive equipment. The complimentary event, which includes lunch, is open to veterans and all other individuals with mobility impairments.
‘First Swing’ is designed to reach out to individuals who have missed out on the opportunity of playing golf because of their disability. Past clinics have included participants with amputated limbs, as well as individuals who have suffered strokes and are now paralyzed from the hip down. The supportive environment of ‘First Swing’ illustrates that almost any physically challenged individual, regardless of age, is able to play golf. Golfers will play with others that are also physically challenged and learn that they are not alone.
The social interaction and development of motor skills that golf provides has been shown to help increase self confidence and pride in personal achievement, while also contributing dramatically to one’s emotional and physical well-being.
