In the spirit of the classic Ryder Cup, GameBook has developed a six-week-long contest for all European and American golfers. The winner of the Golf GameBook Cup – which is actually the biggest ever golf competition – will be revealed after the final week of the tournament. The final contest week starts on Monday the 3rd of September, and includes five simultaneous challenges. After the four weekly challenges the U.S. team is leading the contest by 3-1. On the final week there’s five more points to collect. Golfers across Europe and the United States have been very active and eager to participate in the Cup. It shows not only via the positive feedback but also the growing numbers of rounds played.
The largest amateur golf tournament of all-time is culminating on this week – which is the Golf GameBook Cup final week.
All European and American golfers are able to participate in the Golf Gamebook Cup simply by entering their score to Gamebook mobile application during the round, or storing them afterwards to the Game Book Clubhouse website. The only condition, on top of the U.S. or European nationality, is that the round played is a full 18-hole. Similarly to the classic Ryder Cup we have nominated experienced captains; the European team captain is the three-time European Tour winner, Johan Edfors from Sweden, and the U.S. captain is the British Open winner Stewart Cink himself.
Growing interest during the Cup
The competition categories of the Gamebook Cup have been varying on a weekly basis. During the first week it was all about the number of birdies, on the second week the contest was about who has better par 3 average. The third challenge was about which continent has less triple bogeys (or worse), and during the fourth week on who’s got more round under net score 80. Finally this week, the fifth week of the competition it is about better putting average.
The Team U.S led by Stewart Cink won clearly the first week of the tournament. Johan Edfors and Team Europe fighted hard on the second week and won by a tiny margin, but on the weeks 3 and 4 Team U.S. demonstrated their power. The current situation is very even, but the sixth and final week will determine the winner. On the final week, all five winning categories are played, each giving an important point to the winner.
There are many indications of the fact that golf competitions that reach across the national borders are becoming an increasingly popular trend in the future. The number of rounds played during the Cup is a good evidence on that.
“The feedback has been really good and it has been great to see how well people have taken this type of pioneering game format. I am glad that not only the Nordic players, but also thousands of North American golfers have been really active. However, I do wish all the luck for the European golfers – it is time to compete seriously. Team USA is leading,”says Kalle VÄinölÄ, one of the founders of GameBook.
“Our fantastic sponsors have added a great amount of interest towards this competition, e.g. they have donated great prizes for the participants. For example, we have had several fancy Samsung Galaxy SIII phones as prizes. We appreciate the feedback we have received from the golfers, and we are going to take that into account in the future, ” VÄinölÄ continues.
The final week of the Gamebook Cup starts on Monday, September 3rd, and continues until Sunday 9th. The final results are announced on the following Monday.
