(Ypsilanti, Mich.) So those tempting Pure Michigan golf commercials have you ready to throw your clubs in the trunk and make a getaway to one of those alluring courses? Okay, but what happens en route when thinking about your overall game, the sour swing, the wild slices, the chunked chips, and the inevitable lost balls? Yep, suddenly you take your foot off the pedal and slow down. You might even pull over to the side of the road and reconsider your plans.
But if you’re lucky, you’ll drive on and enroll instead at an award-winning golf school at one of two award-winning Michigan golf courses. If you’re lottery lucky, you’ll enroll at both! Beginning May 12-15, the acclaimed Kendall Golf Academy, based in Ypsilanti at Miles of Golf, will be on the road and conducting a series of golf schools at Forest Dunes Golf Club in Roscommon and at Tullymore Golf Resort in Stanwood.
“We’re grateful to be partnering with such superb golf properties as Forest Dunes and Tullymore,” said Dave Kendall, a two-time Michigan PGA Teacher of the Year and founder of Kendall Academy. “They are outstanding destinations for serious and casual golfers alike and so we’re particularly excited about being there and sharing our expertise.” In addition to Kendall, the schools will be led by Michigan Golf Hall of Fame members Jack Seltzer and Lynn Janson as well as former Michigan PGA Golf Professional of the Year Frank McAuliffe. All of them have won numerous state championships.
At Forest Dunes which recently opened a new 14-room hotel, the Kendall/Seltzer Getaway School returns for a second year. It will offer a series of two-day schools in the spring and summer months along with one-day schools in June, July and August. The two-day schools feature instruction each day on fundamentals, full swing and wedge game essentials and conclude with an 18 hole round with one of the accomplished instructors/players. Package rates include meals, practice facility usage, golf rounds, instruction and on-site lodging.
Located in northern Michigan, Forest Dunes GC is one of the state’s most celebrated golf courses. Designed by Tom Weiskopf, it was rated #23 by Golf Digest in its America’s 100 Greatest Public Golf Courses list and #2 in its Best Public Courses in Michigan rankings. It boasts a 10-acre practice facility which will be the venue for the classes.
Another school-the Kendall/Janson Academy School-will be held at Tullymore Golf Resort in Stanwood, only an hour’s drive north of downtown Grand Rapids. It too offers top-notch facilities and amenities. The resort’s two award winning golf courses, Tullymore and St. Ives, along with excellent practice facilities and on-site accommodations, deliver an ideal location for the Kendall/Janson Academy School. Tullymore, designed by Jim Engh, was honored as Golf Digest’s Best New Upscale Public Course in 2003 while St. Ives, designed by Michigan’s Jerry Matthews, is a perennial 5-star rated course by Golf Digest.
At Tullymore, each school will have a maximum of three students for each professional instructor. During the stay for the school, each golfer receives several hours of morning instruction in all aspects of the game, meals, tee gift and afternoon rounds of golf, while playing alongside a PGA professional instructor and championship-honed player. Lodging is included for the two- and three-day schools.
Package rates for the Kendall Golf Schools range from $595 to $1195-depending upon days of instruction. On certain dates, there’s an option of adding a third day with more short-game emphasis.
