Four-time CMA Musician of the Year Mac McAnally and internationally-acclaimed jazz keyboardist Marcus Johnson scheduled to play in June golf events to help people affected by cancer
MALIBU, CA (June 14, 2013) — Music and golf fans have something to cheer about this month, “National Golf To End Cancer Month,” as two of their favorite celebrities have committed to play golf and music to fight cancer.
Internationally acclaimed Billboard charted jazz keyboardist Marcus Johnson (www.flobrands.com) will tee it up for 36 holes at Malibu Golf Club on June 21, followed by performing a benefit concert at H.O.M.E. in Beverly Hills at 8 pm that evening. The following weekend, Mac McAnally (www.macmcanally.com), who performs with Jimmy Buffett and writes for Buffett, Kenny Chesney and other artists, will tee it up with the members of Naperville CC. Their efforts are part of National Golf To End Cancer Month to raise funds to help families affected by cancer and to promote wellness and cancer prevention through golf.
About Marcus Johnson
“It’s an honor. I can’t think of a better place to be than in L.A. on June 21st,” said Marcus Johnson. “When (MOM Founder) A.J. Ali called, I knew I had to respond. In fact, I’m performing in the D.C. area on the 20th, flying across country early the next morning to play golf and do the concert in L.A. on the 21st, then I’m flying out the next morning to go back east to perform another show in the D.C. area on the 22nd.”
Johnson, a member of the MOM Board of Directors, is fully committed to the mission, contributing his passion for golf and his prodigious musical talents on many occasions since the organization began in 2006. Johnson is featured on the award-winning 2007 Survivor Celebration inspirational music CD executive produced by Ali that was distributed to approximately 10,000 cancer survivors nationwide. The CD included a song Ali wrote for his wife Jane, a breast cancer survivor. Johnson headlined a PGA Fall Expo concert at the House of Blues in Las Vegas in 2007 along with other artists featured on the CD.
Following golf on June 21, Johnson will perform a benefit concert at H.O.M.E., an upscale jazz supper club in Beverly Hills starting at 8 pm. Information is available at www.musictoendcancer.org. Cover charge to the charity is $20. There will also be raffle and auction items including a day at the horse races at Santa Anita, a $5,000 value portrait package, and much more! MJ’s Flo wine brand will be available, along with a full cash bar and menu all evening long.
About Mac McAnally
Anyone who’s a Jimmy Buffett or Kenny Chesney fan will be familiar with Mac McAnally. He has written for some of country music’s biggest stars and is a wonderful musician singer songwriter in his own right, having won four CMA musician of the year awards.
“I’ve known Mac for about five or six years now and he is truly a great guy,” said Ed Woronicz, G2EC Executive Director. “Mac is a golf enthusiast who enjoys playing the game as a break from the many long hours he spends in the studio. When I reached out to him a few weeks back, Mac’s response was ‘I love this idea and hope to play, but will participate with pledges either way.’ As luck has it, his schedule puts him here in Chicago for a Buffet concert, so the decision was made to tee it up together for Golf To End Cancer on June 28. It’s been about three years since Mac and I last played, so now playing together in support of Golf To End Cancer will be extra special.”
Anyone wishing to support Mac on June 28 can do so by going directly to http://golftoendcancer.dojiggy.com/mac. Adds Woronicz, “I’m hoping that the entire country music industry will log on and support Mac McAnally and ‘Team Mac’ on June 28.”
The Golf To End Cancer Marathon is taking place nationwide June 14-30. During that two-week period, golfers in every state will play 18 or 36 holes at their local golf course to fight cancer.
While the Naperville Country Club events with McAnally are exclusively for the members of the private club, the L.A. area events at Malibu Golf Club and H.O.M.E. with Johnson are open to the public. If you’re not located in L.A. or Chicago, you can donate online or participate by playing at any golf course in America. Visit www.golftoendcancer.org/marathon for details on the program nationwide, the golf day at Malibu GC, and ways you can help.
