Highlights Include Great Golf, Fellowship, Tributes by Area Residents and Students

June 27, 2013, Myrtle Beach, S.C. – More than 800 military veterans enjoyed Memorial Day week in Myrtle Beach by competing in the 30th annual National Retired Military Golf Classic sponsored by National Golf Management and Oceana Resorts.

The largest and longest-running golf event for retired military in the world was contested May 29-June 1 at the three Myrtle Beach National courses (King’s North, West and SouthCreek), Long Bay Club and Aberdeen Country Club – all operated by National Golf Management.

Among the highlights were the traditional ovations for players accompanied by an impressive display of flags by residents along the 14th hole at Long Bay, and the tending of special U.S. Flags by Carolina Forest High School Jr. ROTC students for players on the flagsticks of finishing holes at Myrtle Beach National.

“Playing host to our nation’s veterans, particularly at this time of the year, is a tremendous honor for us,” said National Golf Management president Bob Mauragas. “It was another outstanding week of golf and fellowship in a spectacular setting. This event is always one of the highlights of our year.”

“Once you come to this event, you just want to keep coming back,” said retired Army Col. Terry Brown, the tournament director. “We encourage veterans who have recently retired and other retired veterans who haven’t been here to experience this great event.”

Men and women competed in four skill-level divisions. Point totals for each round were calculated by subtracting an assigned “factor” from each player’s gross score. Point totals from each round were totaled for final ranking.

Men’s winners were James Lynch of Whispering Pines, N.C., in Division A; Jessie Callahan of Stedman, N.C., in Division B; Theodus Rozier of Riverside, Ohio, in Division C; and Paul Grimm of Jacksonville, Fla., in Division D. Women’s winners were Wendy Gee of Summerville, S.C., in Division A; Charlotte Briggs of Columbia, S.C., in Division B; Patricia Etheridge of Wesley Chapel, Fla., in Division C; and Joan Howard of Alexandria, Va., in Division D.
