VACAVILLE, CA – The Northern California PGA Foundation announced the winners of its Jim Langley Scholarship – Sara Scarlett of Woodland High School in Woodland and Troy Maxoutopoulis of Amador Valley High School in Pleasanton. The Langley Scholarship Fund selects award recipients based on academic achievement, professional employment, community service, character, and golf playing ability.
The Jim Langley Scholarship Fund
Through the NCPGA Scholarship Program, the Jim Langley Scholarship Fund is able to support and encourage continuing education by assisting students residing within the bounds of the NCPGA Section with post-secondary schooling. Graduating high school seniors are provided with a means to achieve their dreams and promote the fundamental values that this great game has to offer. Scholarships of $2,000 each are awarded to one male and one female student.
The Langley Scholarship derives its funds from the NCPGA Foundation’s high profile annual fundraiser “The Langley – A Tribute to Legends.” This year’s event will take place August 11-12 at The Inn at Spanish Bay & Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach. The fundraising event will honor golf legends Billy Casper, PGA TOUR Veteran, and Duke Butler, III, president of the Frys.com Open.
The Langley – A Tribute to Legends is presented by title sponsor Capital Insurance Group; presenting sponsors AON Benfield, Frys.com Open Championship, and Kelly-Moore Paints; and supporting sponsors Almaden Press, American Airlines, Full Turn Direct, Golf Insurance Services, Marival Residences & World Spa, and The Old Course Experience.
Sara Scarlett
Scarlett plans to apply her scholarship toward the University of Texas at Austin, where she will pursue a Business Marketing degree and participate as a student athlete on the Women’s Golf Team. “I would like to be either a commentator for the Golf Channel or a marketing manager at a golf-related company,” said Scarlett.
Scarlett is one of the top female golfers in the Sacramento area and has an exceptional grade point average. However it is her contributions to the community that set her apart. Among her many volunteer activities she co-founded Cart Smarts (www.cartsmarts.org) and is its Director of Media Relations to help promote golf cart safety. She is also founder of Sara’s Sunshine Bags, making and donating activity bags for patients at Shriner’s Hospital. She lends her time to The First Tee and is a Life skills Instructor for The First Tee of Greater Sacramento, where she teaches Player, Par, and Birdie life skills prior to tournaments.
Troy Maxoutopoulis
Maxoutopoulis has narrowed down his choices to three universities – Elon University, James Madison University, and Texas Christian University, where he plans to study Communications/Journalism and focus on Sports Broadcasting. “I plan on getting a job where I can analyze, broadcast, and call play-by-plays for a sports team,” said Maxoutopoulis.
Maxoutopoulis is Captain of his high school’s Varsity Boys Golf Team. Among his many achievements, he is member of the National Society of High School Scholars, whose mission is to recognize academic excellence and to encourage members to apply their unique talents, vision, and potential for the betterment of themselves and the world. He is also a participant of The First Tee Tri-Valley and is currently working through the Ace Level, which is the international organization’s highest distinction. Maxoutopoulis is an extremely motivated young man, who is focused on giving back to his local community and supporting disadvantaged groups.
Continued Success
Previous recipients of the Jim Langley Scholarship have continued to pursue their education at some of the nation’s leading universities, focusing on degrees that range from engineering and finance, to law and sports psychology. Langley scholars also have gone on to compete on their college golf teams, earning a variety of honors earned along the way – most notably James W. Reede III, a Jackson State University freshman golfer from Sacramento, was inducted into the Collegiate Division of the African-American Golfers Hall of Fame in May. Reede is a Civil Engineering major with a 3.819 GPA.
