Michael McVeigh faces all-day challenge on Veterans Day at Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas
November 5, 2013, Birmingham, Ala. – On Veterans Day, Michael McVeigh’s performance on the golf course won’t be judged by his scorecard. Instead, he’ll be racing against the clock.
McVeigh, a student at Golf Academy of America in Dallas whose stint in the Army included tours in Iraq and Somalia, will spend 11 hours racing around Brookhaven Country Club in a quest to play 11 18-hole (198 holes) rounds of golf in 11 hours.
The event will raise awareness and funds for Salute Military Golf Association (SMGA), a non-profit organization that provides rehabilitative golf experiences and family-inclusive golf opportunities for post-9/11 wounded war veterans. Students from Golf Academy of America’s colleges in San Diego, Phoenix, Myrtle Beach and Orlando will hold similar Veterans Day golf marathons.
Military veterans comprise about one-fourth of Golf Academy of America’s students.
“It’s important to Golf Academy of America to recognize and honor military veterans who sacrifice so much for our country,” said Golf Academy of America president Jim Hart.
Fellow students at Golf Academy of America in Dallas will support McVeigh’s efforts by driving him, spotting shots, teeing golf balls and tending flagsticks.
“I wanted to give something back to my fellow military veterans,” said McVeigh, now a sergeant in the Army National Guard. “I’m proud that Golf Academy of America sponsors events like this. ”
