Laser Link Golf Commends The USGA And The R&A For Allowing Electronic Measurement Devices In 2014

February 18, 2014

MADISON, WI – Participants in major amateur golf events around the world will be carrying a new piece of equipment thanks to recent statements released by both the USGA and R&A. The organizations have announced that beginning in 2014, they will allow the use of electronic measuring devices (EMD’s) in all of their amateur competitions. As a leader in distance measurement technology and solutions for the golf market, Laser Link Golf has worked for years to change the way EMD’s are viewed by the world of golf, and these recent events have lent justification to the company’s efforts. Adoption of the Local Rule means events like the men’s and women’s US Amateur, the Amateur Championship, Walker Cup, and Curtis Cup will all allow EMD’s during competition.

It’s another milestone in an evolution of the rules that began more than fifteen years ago. The first major change came in 2006 when the rule-making bodies instituted Decision 14-3/0.5, which allowed a committee to permit the use of EMD’s during play by Local Rule. The latest announcement’s significance lies in the fact that for the first time, the USGA and R&A will adopt this Local Rule in their amateur competitions.

“Congratulations to both the USGA and the R&A for a job well done,” said Rob O’Loughlin, president of Laser Link Golf. “This decision is good not only for championship participants, but for all of golf. We understand the complicated process that is involved, and we appreciate all of the consideration they’ve given us over the years. We’re excited about the decision, and we look forward to working alongside the USGA, R&A, and any other organizations whose goals are to grow and to promote this great game.”

Additionally, O’Loughlin is excited to see these top amateur events as a sort of proving ground for laser rangefinders.

“For years, the laser vs. GPS debate has raged on,” said O’Loughlin. “Which is the best way to measure distance in golf? When the best amateur players have a choice, which technology will they choose? We know the overwhelming choice will be laser rangefinders, and we’re excited to see the technology proven to be the right choice for those who want to play their best game.”
