Roy Nix who held his first head professional job in 1967 at the age of 21, completed the PGA Business School in 1968, earned the distinction of AGCP Master of Golf Club Technology in 2009, and was selected by Golf Digest Magazine in 2011 as one of America’s Best 100 Clubfitters moves to the next phase of his long career in golf.
Due to health issues Roy could no longer keep the hours required to keep a full time retail shop open. To remain active he closed his retail golf shop in 2012 and built a fitting complex at his home to replicate his state of the art fitting facility. What started as a small workshop and fitting area evolved into a full workshop, fitting studio and small outdoor putting facility in his back yard. “I have to keep doing what I enjoy,” said Roy. “I cannot do as much as I once did but I can enjoy doing a limited number of fittings and by keeping my testing and analyzing equipment up to date. I can also continue research and testing for with better fitting techniques to help golfers play better golf. Now that I do not have to maintain a full time retail business I can also spend more time working on ways to help those who do not have a qualified fitter near enough to them to visit for a live fitting.”
Roy recently developed a WordPress web site to provide information to golfers who want to know what to expect from a quality fitting. Much of the information contained in Roy’s best selling Kindle book at Amazon.com is also contained on his vast web site. The site is designed to answer the questions Roy heard from golfers the most during his 12 years devoted to custom fitting. Roy said: “I tried to include all the articles I’ve written over the years as well as answer all the questions I’ve had from my golfers over the years.” The site is designed to allow a golfer to read the site as his own pace and get the information he needs to judge how much fitting he needs.
The site is also designed to allow Roy to help golfers with long distance fitting needs to get a better set of golf clubs even when they cannot find or get to a suitable facility to do an on-site analysis. Roy believes that based on his years of experience in fitting he can get most golfers 75% to 85% fitted by using an email Q&A along with a few follow up questions and maybe a phone call or two There are some things that golfers do that are common to specific miss fitted club characteristics that can be detected by shot shape and most can be corrected by getting answers to the right questions. Roy has spent the past five or six years developing his list of questions and has helped golfers as far away as Australia to play better golf. As he does more fittings, and builds more sets more questions continue to evolve, therefore, his list of questions is always going to be a dynamic document.
Although there is nothing close to a live fitting with a qualified fitter, if a golfer can find a place to access a launch monitor and hit test shots with his clubs and make slight changes to his test clubs over time and report the results a very close fit can be produced and will improve most a golfers chances of hitting higher quality golf shots more consistently. By hitting test shots and reporting the results coupled with over a decade of fitting experience great results can be had by most. Roy tells us that he has had quite a number of golfers who have had sales clerks fit them at the major retailers call and go through his process and he has been able to significantly improve their ability to hit quality shots with his process. There is no doubt that a qualified fitter working long distance is a better experience solution for a golfer than a live session with a sales clerk at a retail store.
Roy primarily builds custom sets and custom clubs with Wishon Golf and Alpha Golf equipment but has access to almost any clubs you might want.
