CHICAGO, IL. (July 6, 2014) – Freedom Golf Association (FGA), an organization founded in 2012 with a primary goal of advancing the delivery of grass roots golf instruction to those with special needs celebrates its Second Anniversary this month.
“FGA has been blessed with outstanding support from donors, volunteers and staff. In two short years, we have progressed beyond expectations and it has been a heartwarming experience to seeing so many special needs people enjoy a sense of freedom with FGA’s assistance” stated E.Q. Sylvester, Chairman and Founder of FGA. “FGA has demonstrated that Golf is truly ‘Anyone’s game’ and we are excited about growing our efforts in the coming months. There is a need and we intend to fulfill it” continued Sylvester.
FGA is currently a Chicago based association serving the special needs community, but has plans to grow chapters nationally to provide instruction, advocate for increased accessibility to golf courses for special needs golfers. In recent months FGA has partnered with organization like, The First Tee of Greater Chicago, Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, Kids Golf Foundation, CAMP Schwab, Wounded Warriors and others to introduce golf as a social and therapeutic opportunity, even if the individuals never actually play on a golf course. “Golf brings wonderful benefits and sense of purpose into people’s lives. Even if the individual only participates at the practice range or inside a gymnasium, they are still doing an activity that gives them the sense of freedom and accomplishment” points out Andy Mears, Director of Golf Operations for FGA.
Freedom Golf Association welcomes anyone with a physical or cognitive disability. Golf is anyone’s game. FGA’s Mission is to bring a sense of joy and freedom to those in the special needs community through their inclusion in the game of golf. FGA is supported by the generosity of donors and appreciates any assistance given.
Freedom Golf Association was founded in July 2012 by Edmund Q. Sylvester. He is a Director of the Western Golf Association and a golf enthusiast. Sylvester became a triple amputee in 2011. Soon after leaving the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, he attempted to hit golf balls at a local range. Without assistance, his attempt was not successful and it became the first step towards forming FGA.
