French Lick, IN – In a continuing effort to help promote and grow the game of golf for women, French Lick Resort has joined forces with former LPGA Professional Nancy Scranton.
The Legends Tour standout will assist the resort in marketing golf to women and help raise awareness for the Old National Bank Legends Championship benefitting Riley Children’s Hospital in August.
“French Lick Resort, with its long history regarding its association with women’s professional golf, is a leader in promoting the game for women, so I feel it’s a natural fit for me to represent the resort and continue growing the game among women,” Nancy said.
“I have fond memories of visiting the resort with my family when I was younger and now I enjoy bringing my own family to experience the multiple activities available. The Legends Championship at The Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort is a wonderful reason for people to visit. They will see great golf by some of the game’s greatest players, witness the history of the resort for themselves and, at the same time, benefit the Riley Children’s Hospital by attending the tournament.”
Nancy, along with several of the greatest players in LPGA history, will be at French Lick Resort August 26-30 for a week celebrating women’s golf. The history of women’s golf in Indiana is steeped in tradition, as attested by Alice Dye, whose husband Pete designed the course that will host the Legends Championship. Earlier in August, Alice will host the Alice Dye Invitational (August 7-9), which brings together women from all walks of life to celebrate the game.
Women’s tournament golf at French Lick Resort dates back to 1958 when Louise Suggs captured the French Lick Women’s Open on the historic Donald Ross course. The LPGA Championship was played at the historic site in 1959 and ’60. Betsy Rawls won in ’59 and the legendary Mickey Wright won in ’60.
Nancy, a native of Centralia, Ill., who currently lives in St. Augustine, Fla., attended Florida State University and the University of Kentucky and served notice of the brilliant professional career ahead. In 2012, she was the first female golfer to be inducted in the University of Kentucky Athletics Hall of Fame.
Nancy turned professional in 1984 and was successful in her first attempt at the LPGA Qualifying Tournament. Her first tournament victory was a major championship – the 1991 du Maurier Classic in Canada – and she won again the following year at the Los Coyotes LPGA Classic.
After undergoing a full shoulder reconstruction in 1996, Nancy won for a third time in 2000 at the Subaru Memorial of Naples, Fla. That same year she qualified for the Solheim Cup team and represented the U.S. in Scotland against the European team. Nancy’s peers voted her the recipient of the 1999 Heather Farr Award as the player showing the most dedication and perseverance.
Nancy has five wins on The Legends Tour and has represented Team USA seven times at the Handa Cup (2007, 2009-2014), the annual contest against the International Team.
