Nearly 200 junior golfers from 9 states will compete in 54-hole event
Myrtle Beach, S.C. – Junior golfers from across America are descending on Myrtle Beach for the 18th annual Palmetto High School Golf Championship, one of the nation’s largest scholastic events.
Forty teams [complete list] from nine states will be participating in the 54-hole college style event, which will be played April 2-4. The Palmetto counts PGA Tour champions Rickie Fowler and Harris English among its most distinguished alumni.
“The Palmetto annually attracts some of golf’s best young talent and teams,” Jeff Monday, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday’s tournament director, said. “But, just as importantly, it introduces the next generation of golfers to Myrtle Beach and the good times and camaraderie forged while traveling to play the game.”
The Palmetto allows high school teams to test themselves against opponents from across the nation, and Forsyth Country Day School has been the measuring stick in recent years. The Lewisville, N.C., power is the two-time defending champion and will be back to defend its crown, though former star Ben Schlottman, who captured medalist honors last year, has graduated and is playing at Auburn.
The tournament opens with a qualifying round on the West Course at Pearl Golf Links. Teams will then be flighted, according to score, for the final 36 holes of competition, which will be played on the Lion’s Paw and Panther’s Run courses at Ocean Ridge Plantation.
Teams from South Carolina, North Carolina, Missouri, New Jersey, California, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Georgia will be competing in this year’s event.
