Panelists tab Tripp Davis-Justin Leonard design the top public course in Metroplex
(THE COLONY, Texas) – Old American Golf Club – the Tripp Davis and Justin Leonard design that pays homage to the “Golden Age” of golf course architecture – remained in the top-40 in the Dallas Morning News’s 2015 ranking of the state’s best layouts.
The golf club, located 20 minutes from the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport, also ranked sixth in the Morning News’s “Top 50 Public Courses,” the highest-rated course in the Metroplex. Nearly 100 panelists from across Texas – PGA professionals, high-ranking amateurs, golf-design experts, golf journalists and other industry heavyweights – evaluated all 800-plus courses using criteria such as shotmaking, versatility, design, memorability, beauty, maintenance and enjoyment.
“We’re always honored to receive these accolades from the Dallas Morning News,” says Mike McCabe, General Manager at Old American Golf Club. “These high rankings are a testament to our incredible staff, who diligently work to provide a memorable golf experience for our members and guests.”
Inspired by a period of golf course architecture excellence between 1911 and 1937, Old American boasts natural contours, hazard styles, native grasses and green shapes that were influenced by some of the greatest layouts in golf. The course has played host to numerous prestigious events, including a U.S. Open qualifier and the Texas Women’s Open.
Old American is also a regular stop for PGA TOUR professionals in DFW. Rod Pampling, who recently won the Web.com Tour’s BMW Charity Pro-Am with the Old American logo on his bag, holds the course record of 66. He broke the previous record held by Nathan Green (67) and Leonard and K.J. Choi before that (68). Other pros utilizing Old American’s world-class practice facilities and tournament-caliber layout include Y.E. Yang, John Senden, Steven Bowditch and Paul Stankowski.
Authentic rustic elements are prevalent throughout – such as a railroad bridge on the outward nine and a former dairy barn that serves as cart storage. Behind the barn sits an organic garden, which has inspired a leading edge culinary program and farm-to-table menu.

About Old American Golf Club
Old American’s natural contours, hazard styles, native grasses and green shapes were influenced by such masterpieces as Shinnecock Hills, National Golf Links, Prairie Dunes and Crystal Downs.
Acclaimed architect Tripp Davis, an accomplished amateur player and former All-American at the University of Oklahoma, and PGA TOUR/Ryder Cup star Justin Leonard, who played golf at the University of Texas, toured and played a handful of America’s classic Golden Age golf courses prior to designing Old American.
The result is a golf course that emphasizes strategy, shot-making and flows with a natural rhythm from the first tee to 18th green. Old American features six sets of tees, ranging from the 5,215-yard forward markers to the 7,174-yard “Leonard” tournament tees. Davis and Leonard conceived the routing and layout with both medal and match play in mind, as golfers are required to hold “steady to par” through a number of holes, but enticed to gamble on birdie or better during select stretches of the course.
