LAKE MARY, FL – One of the Orlando area’s most popular tournament courses, Timacuan Golf And Country Club, has been chosen by the USGA to host a U.S. Junior Amateur Sectional Qualifying Tournament on Monday and Tuesday, June 29-30. Timacuan is only one of four courses in Florida chosen to host a sectional qualifier.
A total of 74 players will tee it up in the sectional qualifier, with the hope of eventually making it to the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship, scheduled for July 20-25 at the Pete Dye-designed Colleton River G.C. in Blufton, S.C. Spectators are invited free of charge to follow the action.
Among the top-ranked U.S. juniors in the field are Eugene Hong of Sanford, Bobby Bai of Lake Mary, Sachin Kumar of Port St. Lucie, Robin Wang of Lake Mary, Jorge Villar of Mexico, Austin Hitt of Longwood and Brandon Mancheno of Jacksonville, all ranked among Golfweek’s top 150 Junior Golfers in the country.
Timacuan has hosted dozens of tournaments of national scope over the years, including the annual $10,000 Timacuan Scramble every January, and most of golf’s professional mini tours.
“Timacuan has a storied tradition of hosting great players and great tournament golf in the Central Florida market,” said Nate Stevenson, Director of Golf Operations. “Being a championship layout with six sets of tees, the course is extremely playable for any level of golfer. With events such as the upcoming U.S. Junior Amateur qualifier, we have worked hard to establish our facility as the best championship venue in central Florida that everyone can come out and enjoy.”
There are many reasons why golf’s governing bodies often choose Timacuan to host their tournaments.
“Timacuan is a good test,” said Kyle Gigiacoble of the Florida State Golf Association. “The greens are always in great shape and the staff is good to work with.”
Timacuan has received rave reviews from the many PGA and LPGA Tour players who have competed in the $10,000 Timacuan Scramble during PGA Merchandise Show week each January.
“I really enjoyed the golf course,” said Graeme McDowell, the Irishman who won the U.S. Open in 2010. “It is a great layout with a links-like feel to it. It can be testy in places if you get off the beaten path, but it is a very fair course. And it is in great condition.”
Said LPGA Tour star Brittany Lincicome, “This is a terrific golf course. It is a good test of golf. You have to be able to move the ball around to be successful here.”
Timacuan features two distinctly different nines. The front nine has a Scottish feel, with open fairways, mounding, sprawling bunkers and large greens. The back nine has more of a Carolinas Low Country feel featuring stately oaks, tall pines, and several water hazards that demand precision off the tee and to the green.
