LAKE MARY, FL (January 13, 2016) – Timacuan Golf & Country Club will host some of the best junior golfers in the world this weekend in the EaglesDream Golf Academy Junior Championship.
The American Junior Golf Association will conduct the 36-hole competition for players aged 12 to 18 on Saturday and Sunday on the highly acclaimed Ron Garl layout. The public is invited to watch the action free of charge. Tee times for the 78-player field will start at 8 a.m. each day.
“We are excited to showcase our golf course and our new Mini-Verde greens to some of the best players in the world,” said Timacuan Golf Director Nate Stevenson. “Since re-opening in September of 2013, our greens have received rave reviews for their consistency. I know these top players will find the course to their liking.”
EaglesDream Academy is located at Timacuan, and is currently home to 26 full-time students, several of whom are ranked among the top 100 juniors in the country. Six EaglesDream Academy students are competing in this event, including highly ranked Robin Wang. Another top-ranked Eagles Dream student, Aden Ye, is competing this weekend in different AJGA tournament, the EaglesDream Championship in Puerto Rico.
Last year’s champion in the boys division at Timacuan, Eugene Hong, is ranked fifth by Golfweek and 10th in the Polo Golf Junior Rankings, and recently advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Junior Amateur. The 15-year-old has verbally committed to play college golf at the University of Florida, and was named to the AJGA Rolex All-America first team.
The girls’ winner from 2015, Abbey Carlson, was honorable mention on the AJGA Rolex All-America team and will play at Vanderbilt next year. She is ranked 28th on the Golfweek junior rankings.
Timacuan has been among the most popular courses in Central Florida since opening in 1988. It has been ranked as high as No. 14 in Florida, and has hosted dozens of national and international competitions. U.S. Open champion Graeme McDowell is among its fans.
“I really enjoyed the golf course,” said McDowell, after playing in the $10,000 Timacuan Scramble in January of 2013. “It is a great layout with a links-like feel to it. It can be testy in places if you get off the beaten path, but it is a very fair course.”
Another fan of Timacuan and the Mini-Verde greens is former world long drive champion David Mobley.
“I was so impressed with the greens,” said Mobley. “The new Mini Verde greens really force you to golf your ball. You have to put it in the right places on these greens. It’s an excellent layout, and these new greens make you play the golf course the way it is suppose to be played.”
Timacuan Golf & Country Club is a semi-private facility, open to the public but also offering outstanding membership packages. For information, call 407-321-0010, ext. 2, or visit www.golftimacuan.com.
