(PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla.) – PGA Golf Club, the 54-hole property owned and operated by the PGA of America, announces its Wanamaker Course vaulted five spots, from 21 to 16, in Golfweek’s Best: State-by-State Courses You Can Play 2016 in Florida.
The Wanamaker Course underwent a significant re-grassing project late last year, heightening the playing experience by introducing new turf to fairways and bunker surrounds, and planting several ornamental species to reframe holes. It was recently rated one of the top-five courses in South Florida by The Golf Channel’s course rating website, Golf Advisor.
Named in honor of Rodman Wanamaker, who in 1916 inspired the birth of The PGA of America, Wanamaker is a classic Florida layout designed by Tom Fazio. It gracefully meanders through a backdrop of wetlands, palm trees and palmettos, and is widely considered one of the state’s most beautiful courses.
“The Golfweek ranking is further validation the enhancements made to Wanamaker appeal to serious golfers who appreciate solid design, challenging shot values and superb conditions,” says Jimmy Terry, General Manager, PGA Golf Club. “Its traditional design complements the architectural stylings of our other onsite 18-hole offerings, the Dye and Ryder Courses, and our nearby ‘community golf course,’ St. Lucie Trail Golf Club.”
Golfweek’s esteemed ranking panel consists of 675 voters from seven countries who rely on 10 criteria to rate a golf course, including overall land plan, variety and memorability of golf holes, conditioning and ecology, and the “Walk in the park test,” which rates the sense of the course as worthy of spending four hours on it. The number of courses per state varies based on course supply, population and level of play; and the Golfweek rankings include daily-fee layouts and golf courses accessible via resorts.
The Dye Course maintained its top-30 ranking in state (No. 27), making PGA Golf Club one of only a handful of properties to place two courses on the list. All four tracks are open to the public and tee times can be reserved at www.pgavillage.com. Traveling golfers can also experience PGA Golf Club via nearly 20 different package options available to book at www.pgavillagegolf.com.
Getting There: PGA Golf Club is conveniently located off Interstate 95 in Port St. Lucie, Fla. just 50 minutes north of Palm Beach International Airport (PBI). PBI offers nearly 100 non-stop flights to more than 25 cities in the U.S. and Canada. It is under a two-hour drive from Orlando, Miami and other Florida population centers.
