PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. – Not long ago, Bob Sowards used the PGA Tournament Series as his personal ATM for early Christmas shopping. Sowards, a PGA of America Golf Professional from Dublin, Ohio, contended in almost every tournament and won more than his share.

Now it’s Dylan Newman of New Rochelle, N.Y., who’s at the front of the ATM line. He won last year’s money title ($17,332) for the third time since 2019 — he was second another year — and looms as the player to beat when the six-event series starts Monday at PGA Golf Club.

“This place is like my second home,” said Newman, an Assistant PGA Golf Professional at Meadow Brook Club.

PGA Golf Club also is the second home for the PGA of America. In 1996, the Series became the first PGA of America-sanctioned event to be held at PGA Golf Club.

The PGA Tournament Series debuted during the 1977-78 winter to provide more playing opportunities for PGA of America Golf Professionals. Bruce Zabriski is the all-time leader with 18 wins, followed by Mike San Filippo (16) and Gene Fieger (15). The winner of each 36-hole event receives $5,000.

Event No. 1 started Monday on the Dye Course. Newman, naturally, won last year’s Event No. 1, overcoming a lost ball in the final round.

The rest of the schedule, including last year’s winner: Event No. 2, Dec. 4-5, Wanamaker (Chris Gabriele); Event No. 3, Dec. 8-9, Ryder (Jeff Sorenson); Event No. 4, Dec. 11-12, Dye (Andre Chi); Event No. 5, Dec. 15-16, Wanamaker (Michael Balcar); Event No. 6, Dec. 18-19, Ryder (Gabriele).

The PGA Tournament Series is presented by GolfPass.
