Northern California PGA Professional Mike Green Inducted into The First Tee of Greater Sacramento Hall of Fame
Head PGA Golf Professional at Del Paso CC is 1 of 6 New Members of the 2019 Hall of Fame; TFTGS Sacramento Golf Hall of Fame Honors Individuals that have had an Everlasting Impact on the Landscape of Golf in and around Sacramento
The Northern California Section of the PGA of America (NCPGA) has announced that Mike Green, Head PGA Golf Professional at Del Paso Country Club in Sacramento, is one of six individuals inducted into the 2019 The First Tee of Greater Sacramento Golf Hall of Fame (TFTGS).
TFTGS’s Hall of Fame was created to recognize those individuals that have had an everlasting impact on the landscape of golf in and around Sacramento. Tour players, club professionals, media personnel, great amateur players and volunteers make up this unique list. Former inductees include Ken Morton Sr., Bob Eastwood, Al Geiberger, Scott McCarron, Kevin Sutherland, Natalie Gulbis and over two dozen more.
Del Paso CC’s Mike Green, who has worked at the club since the early 1980s, was honored for decades of commitment to giving back to the local community. He has lead and or been involved in a number of events that have raised millions of dollars, including the Swing at Cancer Pro-Am, Del Paso’s Charity Golf Marathon, Del Paso’s Pro-Am Fore Kids, the 2015 U.S. Senior Open and the Del Paso Foundation, among others.
“The NCPGA is extremely proud to have one of our Members elected to the prestigious TFTGS Hall of Fame,” said Len Dumas, Executive Director, Northern California PGA. “Mike Green is a shining example of the value PGA Professionals bring to their local communities. He has not only spent countless hours volunteering at junior camps and clinics throughout the Sacramento Valley while working to grow the game, but his commitment to introducing golf to underprivileged youths, and the physically challenged, is unmatched.”
Green, who was born and raised in Oroville, California, has enjoyed a lifetime passion and love for the game of golf, which was developed through his experiences in junior golf. His success competing at the junior level led to a golf scholarship to the University of Pacific, in Stockton, California. Following college, he played professionally on the Mini-Tours in Florida, before choosing his path in the business and teaching of golf and securing his PGA Membership.
In 1982, Green returned to Northern California in pursuit of a job in golf and found an opening at Del Paso CC. He spent the next 11 years learning the business from his mentor, Les Streeper, before assuming the Head PGA Golf Professional position when Streeper retired in 1993.
For the past 26 years, Green has been instrumental in promoting the game both internally at Del Paso CC and externally throughout the community. In fact, he was at the forefront when Del Paso hosted the 2015 U.S. Senior Open, which was the single largest sporting event in Sacramento’s history. The Championship generated over $1,000,000in revenue for the County and City of Sacramento, and resulted in the largest gift to the First Tee of Greater Sacramento in its history.
Additionally, from 1991-2005 Green and his assistant professionals conducted the Del Paso Country Club Charity Golf Marathon. Thanks to members pledging donations for holes played, birdies, eagles and aces, the club has over $115,000 that was distributed to the Children’s Receiving Home of Sacramento, Del Paso Foundation, Junior Golf Association of Northern California, People Reaching Out, SAY Golf and River Oak Center for Children. And, among his many other charitable endeavors, Green has worked closely with the Del Paso membership to facilitate fundraising events for the Del Paso Foundation, which provides scholarships to youth who are engaged in the golf, hospitality and food industries. To date, the Foundation has distributed over $300,000 in youth scholarships.
“Promoting the game of golf on behalf of Del Paso CC has been a true privilege for me over the past 26 years,” said Green. “As a PGA Professional I have had the great opportunity to give back to the Sacramento community in so many areas, and I have cherished working with golfers of all levels, as well as introducing the game to those less fortunate. Golf impacts lives in such an amazing way and it has been a pleasure to put smiles on people’s faces, especially children.”
