SEDONA, AZ – Most golf courses that are well into their third decade of existence can expect wear and tear issues with their irrigation system. Such was the case with the beautiful par-71 Sedona Golf Resort earlier this year in Arizona.
So, management at Sedona contracted with PTI Golf of Henderson, NV, to upgrade a portion of the 38-year-old irrigation system, and at the same time, renovate three-dozen bunkers. PTI’s Cruz Urive oversaw the project.
“The age of the irrigation system is a factor, and the soil in our area is red rock clay so that contributes to the issues,” said Sedona General Manager Jeremy Hayman. “We aerify the fairways twice a year to get water down into the soil, and we top dress. It’s a challenge to keep all areas consistent.”
To help create more consistent irrigation, PTI replaced the eight-inch mainline that was originally installed in 1988 on holes 11 and 13, and reconfigured irrigation lines on the practice range tee and on holes five and nine. The team then graded and re-sodded the affected areas.
“The completion of this project will allow us to have more consistent irrigation cycles nightly, leading to better turf health and course conditions,” said Hayman.
The bunker work covered more of the golf course. A total of 39 greenside bunkers were rebuilt, while five-and-a-half bunkers were eliminated. The bunkers were refilled with 1,200 tons of premium Arizona 50/50 bunker sand.
The result at Sedona is a better-conditioned golf course with more attractive and playable greenside areas.
“We are happy with how it turned out, and I think our golfers are as well,” said Hayman. “The on-site PTI crew was very good to work with. Cruz was great. I think we had two different changes to the scope of the project that popped up, and they adapted quicky without problems.”
