Retief Goosen wins Mitsubishi Electric Classic at TPC Sugarloaf with JumboMax

Two-time U.S. Open champion claims fifth PGA Tour Champions title 24 years after winning on the same course

LAKE PARK, FLORIDA — Retief Goosen won the Mitsubishi Electric Classic at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Georgia on Sunday, claiming his fifth PGA Tour Champions title with a bogey-free back nine and a closing birdie on the 18th hole.

The 57-year-old two-time U.S. Open champion finished with 39 points under the modified Stableford scoring system, holding off the field by two points. Goosen played a prototype JumboMax counterbalanced swing grip in size XS and JumboMax Mid-Jumbo putter grip throughout the week.

Twenty-four years ago, Goosen won the PGA Tour’s BellSouth Classic at the same TPC Sugarloaf layout — one of the rare champions to claim titles on the same course across two different tours in two different decades. His career record now stands at seven PGA Tour wins, 14 European Tour wins, and five PGA Tour Champions victories: a body of work built on longevity and consistency at the highest level of the game.

Three points off the lead entering Sunday, Goosen made five birdies in a six-hole stretch on the front nine and didn’t let go.

“The putter this week got me going and that’s how you win tournaments,” Goosen said.

The win carried personal meaning beyond the trophy. “The biggest emotion is that I’ve won in front of my son, him actually seeing me win, not seeing me on TV win,” Goosen said. “Last time I won in front of him he was one year old in (the 2024) U.S. Open. Really proud moment to have him here and see me lifting a trophy.”

Goosen’s counterbalanced JumboMax swing grip — a prototype built in size XS — works by shifting the club’s balance point closer to the hands, helping certain players accelerate their release and keep the club more in front of them in the downswing. The result is a higher launch angle, more draw bias, and increased clubhead speed when paired with the proper size for a player’s swing. Bryson DeChambeau and Sergio Garcia also play JumboMax counterbalanced swing grips.

On the greens, Goosen trusts JumboMax’s Mid-Jumbo putter grip, which merges a classic pistol shape with a heavier 106-gram construction to promote consistency.

“Retief is one of the best players of his generation and he’s still proving it at 57,” said John Mazzanoble, President of JumboMax Grips. “Watching him birdie 18 to win with his son there to see it — that’s what this is all about.”
